Metronomy. Live In Brighton Tuesday 19th April 2011.

A moment. Something that makes you proud that you were THERE. A band on the cusp of greatness. This was one such occasion.

Brighton is surprisingly warm for a mid-week evening but unfortunately the hundreds of beach dwellers are missing out on the magic at work in a tiny venue situated literally on the beach itself. Some can only stop and wonder as they catch glimpses of sound from the band of the moment. A band they won't have heard of... yet.

The Digital is busier than usual tonight and there's a spark in the air, something that not even the intense heat and the technical difficulties facing support act GhostPoet can wither. People are here expecting.

The band in question is Metronomy. Indie-dance also-rans up until this year on the back of too very good, but ultimately doomed-only-to-underground-success, albums of dance beats and synth squelches.

The English Riviera
That changed this month with the release of their new record; The English Riviera. Named after the Devon region of the same name, and frontman Joe Mount's hometown, this album is quite literally a return to their roots.

Sleeker, quieter, subtler, the record is astonishing and works even better live providing respite from the high octane instrumental tunes of their first album Pip Paine (Pay The £5000 You Owe.)

Songs such as She Wants and We Broke Free shake the audience with their formidable bass whilst new single The Look inspires a rapturous singalong. These songs suit the city and the audience perfectly, being 10 metres from the setting of much of the song's stories; the beach. Joe Mount even acknowledges this with his introduction to The Bay.

Fitting perfectly between older stalwarts such as A Thing For Me, Heartbreaker and a climactic, incendiary Radio Ladio, Metronomy are proving they're worth the five star reviews and top 40 status of their new album.

This was a moment in time, one you'll be swearing you were at in ten years time. Metronomy are going overground, surrender your hearts.
